A website redesign in Australia usually costs $2,000 to $10,000 for a small business site built by a freelancer, and $5,000 to $30,000 or more with an agency. A light refresh can cost less, while a full rebuild or an online store often costs $15,000 or more.
The price depends on how much of your current site you keep. A new look on a site that works well underneath is quick. Replacing old code, moving to a new platform or connecting your CRM takes much longer.
I’m Jay, a freelance web developer who redesigns websites for businesses across Australia. This guide breaks down website redesign costs, the extras people forget, and how to keep your quote down.
Website redesign costs at a glance#
These are typical prices for 2027 in Australian dollars, taken from three published Australian guides checked in November 2026 (listed under Sources). I’ll update this guide if prices change during the year.
| Type of redesign | What you usually get | Typical cost (AUD) |
|---|---|---|
| Light refresh | New fonts, colours, images and copy edits; the same pages and platform | $2,000 – $6,000 |
| Small business redesign, 7–10 pages | A new design and layout, updated content, built by a freelancer | $2,500 – $10,000 |
| Custom redesign by an agency, 7–10 pages | A fully custom design and build by a team | $15,000 – $30,000+ |
| Full rebuild | A new platform or replacing old custom code | $15,000 – $60,000 |
| Online store redesign | Products, payments and shipping carried across | Freelancer $8,500 – $20,000; agency $40,000 – $75,000+ |
| Connecting other systems | Your CRM, payments or booking system | Add $5,000 – $25,000 |
For most small and medium businesses, a freelancer redesign in the $2,500 to $10,000 range is the realistic budget. The higher figures are for agencies, large stores and sites that need a complete rebuild.
What changes the price of a redesign#
Most of the difference between a $3,000 redesign and a $30,000 one comes down to six things.
- How much you keep. Keeping your platform, pages and content is far cheaper than starting again. A refresh changes the look; a rebuild changes everything underneath.
- Number of pages. A 7-page site is a very different job from a 50-page site with service, location and blog pages.
- Custom design or a theme. A custom design in Figma fits your brand better but takes longer than adapting a ready-made theme.
- Features. Bookings, member logins, online payments and links to your CRM each add time.
- Moving platforms. Moving from Wix or Squarespace to WordPress, for example, means rebuilding every page rather than restyling it.
- Who does it. A freelancer is usually cheaper than an agency because you’re paying for one person instead of a team and an office.
Costs people forget#
A redesign quote often covers the design and build only. Ask whether these are included, because they can add thousands.
| Extra | Typical cost (AUD) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Content writing | $500 – $3,000 | New pages need new words, and old text rarely fits a new design |
| SEO setup and redirects | $1,500 – $4,500 for full SEO setup | Without redirects from old page addresses, you can lose your Google rankings |
| Photos and graphics | Varies | Stock photos are cheap; a photographer costs more but looks better |
| Plugins and licences | $0 – $100 per month | Paid plugins, fonts or booking tools carry ongoing fees |
| Hosting upgrade | $15 – $150 per month | A faster host is often part of fixing a slow site |
| Care after launch | $50 – $300 per month | Updates, backups and security keep the new site fast and safe |
Redirects deserve a special mention. If any page addresses change, every old address needs a redirect to its new one, or Google treats those pages as gone. Here’s how to redesign a website without losing your Google rankings.
Prices in this table come from my website cost guide, which is based on published Australian price guides.
How much does it cost to update an existing website?#
Not every website needs a redesign. If the design still works, smaller updates can fix the problem for a fraction of the price.
- Hourly work: freelancers in Australia usually charge $80 to $150 an hour, and agencies $100 to $250 (website cost guide). Scoped design-and-build work in Melbourne is quoted at $120 to $300 an hour (What’s The Damage?).
- Care plans: $50 to $300 a month usually covers updates, backups, security and small edits.
- Fixed-price fixes: speed improvements, a new page or a broken form are often quoted as one fixed job.
If your site is slow but looks fine, start with a free website speed test. Speed fixes cost far less than a redesign.
How to keep the cost down#
You can often save thousands without ending up with a weaker website.
- Refresh instead of rebuilding if your platform and page structure still work.
- Write or update the text yourself. Even a rough draft saves your developer hours.
- Send a clear brief. List the pages you need and two or three websites you like, and say what you’d change about your current one.
- Keep your platform unless it’s genuinely holding you back. Moving platforms means rebuilding every page.
- Use a well-built theme if a fully custom design isn’t essential for your brand.
- Agree on revision rounds up front. Endless small changes are where budgets quietly grow.
- Compare what each quote includes, not just the total. A cheap quote without redirects or SEO can cost you more in lost enquiries.
Signs your website needs a redesign#
If two or more of these sound familiar, a redesign is probably worth the cost.
- It’s slow on phones, even after speed fixes. See why your website is slow.
- It looks dated next to your competitors, or no longer matches your brand.
- You can’t update text or images without calling a developer.
- Visitors arrive but don’t get in touch.
- It runs on an old platform or PHP version that can’t be updated safely. See is my WordPress website safe?
- It doesn’t show up on Google for the services you offer.
- You’ve outgrown it and need bookings, payments or new sections it can’t handle.
Common questions#
How much does it cost to have a website redesigned?#
For most small business websites, $2,500 to $10,000 with a freelancer and $5,000 to $30,000 or more with an agency. A light refresh can start around $2,000.
What do small changes to my website cost?#
Small updates are usually charged by the hour, at $80 to $150 an hour for freelancers in Australia. A care plan of $50 to $300 a month covers regular updates and small edits.
Is it cheaper to redesign or build a new website?#
It’s cheaper to redesign when your platform and structure still work, because more of the existing site is reused. If the site runs on old code or the wrong platform, a rebuild can cost less over time than patching it.
How long does a website redesign take?#
It depends on the number of pages, the features and how quickly content and feedback come back. Ask for a delivery date in writing before you start.
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?#
Not if it’s planned properly. Keep the content that ranks, redirect every old page address that changes, and check Search Console after launch.
How I can help#
